Chain 82 stitches.

Abbreviations:

FPD: YO, insert hook from front to back to front around post of next st, YO and pull up a LP, (YO and pull through 2 loops on hook) twice - front post DC.

BPDC: YO, insert hook from back to front to back around post of next DC, YO and pull up a loop, (YO and pull through 2 loops on hook) twice - back post DC.

FLC2: skip 1 st, FPDC in next 1 st, bring hook in front of st just made and FPDC in skipped stitch - front left cross on 2 sts.

FRC2: skip 1 st, FPDC in next 1 stitch, bring hook behind stitch just made and FPDC in skipped stitch - front right cross on 2 sts. FRC2: skip 1 st, FPDC in next 1 stitch, bring hook behind stitch just made and FPDC in skipped stitch - front right cross on 2 sts.

BBLC2: skip 1 stitch, BPDC in next 1 stitch, bring hook in front of stitch just made and BPDC in skipped stitch -back left cross on 2 stitches.

BRC2: skip 1 stitch, BPDC in next 1 stitch, bring hook behind stitch just made and BPDC in skipped stitch -back right cross on 2 stitches.

LT: skip 2 stitches, BPDC in next 2 stitches, bring hook in front of stitches just made and FPDC in skipped stitches - left twist made.

RT: skip 2 stitches, FPDC in next 2 stitches, bring hook behind stitches just made and BPDC in skipped stitches - right twist made.

DFLC: skip 1 stitch, FPDC in next 2 stitches, bring hook in front of stitches just made and FPDC in skipped stitch - double front left cross made.
to INC- work 2 FPDC or BPDC in same stitch one stitch from edge - (to increase).
to DEC- work FPDC or BPDC through 2 stitches at once one stitch from edge - (to decrease)

CENTER CABLE: (worked on 22 stitches).

Row 1: (right side): BPDC, FLC2, 2 BPDC, LT, FLC4, RT, 2 BPDC, FLC2, BPDC.
Row 2: FPDC, 2 BPDC, 4 FPDC, 2 BRC4, 4 FPDC, 2 BPDC, FPDC.
Row 3: BPDC, FLC2, 2 BPDC, RT, FLC4, LT, 2 BPDC, FLC2, BPDC.
Row 4: FPDC, 2 BPDC, LT, 2 FPDC, 4 BPDC, 2 FPDC, RT, 2 BPDC, FPDC.
Row 5: BPDC, FLC4, 4 BPDC, 4 FPDC, 4 BPDC, FLC4, BPDC.
Row 6: FPDC, 4 BPDC, 4 FPDC, BLC4, 4 FPDC, 4 BPDC, FPDC.
Row 7: BPDC, FLC4, 4 BPDC, 4 FPDC, 4 BPDC, FLC4, BPDC.
Row 8: FPDC, 2 BPDC, RT, 2 FPDC, 4 BPDC, 2 FPDC, LT, 2 BPDC, FPDC.
Repeat from rows 1 - 8 for center CABLE pattern.

TWIST: ( work on 3 stitches)

Row 1: (right side): DFLC.
Row 2, 3: BPDC.repeat rows 1 and 2 for TWIST pattern. LOBSTER CLAW: (worked on 14 stitches):
Row 1 (right side): BPDC, 2 FPDC, FRC4, FLC4, 2 FPDC, BPDC.
Row 2: FPDC, BLC4, 4 BPDC, BRC4, FPDC.
Row 3: BPDC, 12 FPDC, BPDC.
Row 4: FPDC, 2 BPDC, BLC4, BRC4, 2 BPDC, FPDC.
Row 5: BPDC, FRC4, 4 FPDC, FLC4, BPDC.
Row 6: FPDC, 12 BPDC, FPDC.
Repeat rows 1-6 for LOBSTER CLAW pattern.

BRAID (worked on 4 stitches):

Row 1: (right side): FRC2, FLC2.Row 2: BPDC, BRC2, BPDC.Row 3: (right side): FRC2, FLC2.
Row 4: BPDC, BLC2, BPDC.
Repeat rows 1-4 for BRAID pattern.

BASKETWEAVE: (multiple of 4 stitches):

Row 1: (right side): BPDC, 2 FPDC, (2 BPDC, 2 FPDC) across, end BPDC.
Row 2: FPDC, (2 FPDC, 2 BPDC) across, end 3 FPDC.
Repeat rows 1 and 2 for BASKETWEAVE pattern. NOTES: chain 2, turn at end of each row or round does not count as a stitch. When joining pieces, 2 rows = 3 stitches. Start: start: chain 82. DC in 3rd chain from hook and in each chain across-80 stitches. Chain 2, turn each row.

Row 1: (right side): Beginning with row 1 of patterns, BASKETWEAVE on 8 stitches, BRAID on 4 stitches, LOBSTER CLAW on 14 stitches, TWIST on 3 stitches, CENTER CABLE on 22 stitches, TWIST on 3 stitches, LOBSTER CLAW on 14 stitches, BRAID on 4 stitches, BASKETWEAVE on 8 stitches.

You must continue working consecutive pattern rows, until piece measures your desired length. To make crochet afghan you'll use worsted weight yarns, and sizes H and I crochet hooks. You can make various sized crochet afghans, that will be right for anyone to everyone.
